I Samuel 15:3, the prophet Samuel gives King Saul this commandment from the Lord: "Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass."
Ezekiel 9:4-7 provides the following account of a message from the Lord: "And the Lord said unto him, Go through...the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both maids and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark..."
Hosea 13:16 sets forth this description of a punishment from the Lord: "Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up."
Deuteronomy 32:23-25 reports that after the Israelites had provoked the Lord to jealousy by worshiping other gods, the Lord said: "...I will spend mine arrows upon them....The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs."
At Numbers chapter 31, the Lord indicates his approval of the following order which Moses gave, as set forth at verses 17 and 18, regarding the manner in which the Israelite soldiers were to treat certain women and children captured in war: "Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."
Isaiah 13:9,15-18 contains this message from the Lord: "Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger....Every one that is found shall be thrust through. ...Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes...and their wives ravished. Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them....[T]hey shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children." Clearly, these verses depict the biblical God as having the moral scruples of a sociopathic mass murderer.

BTW, the babies in question are much better off in heaven then on this world that causes it own suffering

You're righT! I'm heading to the local hospital after work and taking a chainsaw to all the babies cus they are much happier in heaven than here where they will suffer.

ok this has nothing to do with being a jw or anything of that nature but it is important to me and i need some help:.

here goes i have been drinking rum and coke (bacardi) since i can remember and finally realized that maybe it is contributing to my severly harsh hangovers.

so i went on a quest in search of a new drink.

i believe i have set the wheels in motion for what i believe will lead to my disfellowshiping.

i have been inactive since 1987 and still getting along with the witnesses (invited to gatherings etc.

) but something came up that finally push my buttons just enough to make me explode.

This second set is interesting because the word used for nature, in the phrase 'sinful nature' means literally his physical body;his flesh. So is the writer here saying kill him so that he will be saved?

Catholics and Superstition - Mother Theresa

apparently mother theresa believed that she was being attacked by the devil.

this article really shows just how superstitious the catholic church is...something that comes into the jw organization with their large number of catholic converts.. most of the supposedly annointed jw's i know were formerly catholic.

Humans can make themselves extinct, I beleive that. I just stated that it is imporbable humans would wipe out ALL life and destroy the earth as was said earlier. Thats a very different statement.

Wipe out one species

wipe out all life.

CALCUTTA, India (CNN) -- Senior church officials in Calcutta acknowledge Mother Teresa had an exorcism performed on her in the latter years of life.

The exorcism took place in a hospital where she had gone for cardiac problems, said Archbishop of Calcutta Henry D'Souza. The archbishop himself had been hospitalized at the same facility and shared the same doctor as Mother Teresa.

He said he noticed that while Mother Teresa was calm during the day, at night she appeared "extremely agitated." D'Souza said Mother Teresa would pull off wires and other monitoring equipment stuck to her body.

He said that is when he believed Mother Teresa "might be under the attack of the evil one." He offered to arrange for an exorcism for the elderly nun. She agreed.

"So I said let's do the prayer of exorcism over her. So I called one of the priests who was a holy man in Calcutta," D'Souza said. "I told him, 'Please say the prayer of exorcism over Mother Teresa.' And he got a shock and said, 'Shall I pray and should I drive out the devil if it's there?'"

"I said, 'Yes, you do.' But he says, 'What will the devil do to me?' I said to him, 'You command the devil to go if he's there. In the name of the church, as archbishop, I command you to go and do it.'"

After the exorcism was over, the archbishop said Mother Teresa "slept like a baby."

He emphasized that other great religious leaders faced similar challenges.

D'Souza said the revelations about Mother Teresa show that she was "both holy and human," making her even more special.

The archbishop also corroborated earlier reports on CNN that Mother Teresa felt abandoned by God at times during her life.

Those revelations were first made to CNN by Mother Teresa's closest confidante, Sister Nirmala, who now heads the order, Missionaries of Charity, established by Mother Theresa in 1950.

"This is part of the spiritual life of people, and God sometimes wants to unite the soul very closely to himself. He will allow them to feel abandoned by Him. And Jesus also on the cross felt he was abandoned," Sister Nirmala said.

She said Mother Teresa is most remembered for her humanness -- "How human she was, how loving she was. How she wanted to be just one of us."

D'Souza told CNN that Mother Teresa felt abandoned particularly in her early years -- feelings she revealed in letters.

He said in one letter she wrote that she had been walking the streets of Calcutta all day searching for a house where she could start her work.

"At the end of the day, she came back and she wrote in her diary, 'Today, I wandered the streets the whole day. My feet are aching and I have not been able to find a home. And I also get the temptation, of the tempter telling me, "Leave all this, go back to the convent in which you came."'"

She found her home and the rest is history. The Missionaries of Charity feeds 500,000 families a year in Calcutta alone, treats 90,000 leprosy patients annually and educates 20,000 children every year.

Millions of Indians marked the fourth anniversary of her death (she died September 5, 1997). The archbishop led a Mass Wednesday morning at the Motherhouse, where Mother Teresa lived. Statues in the house were decorated with garlands and her grave was bedecked in flowers.

The Vatican has begun the process of trying to declare her a saint who dedicated her life to the service of the poor.

"Today, Mother is with God. Now in his presence, she has more power with God. She is no more on earthly level," Sister Nirmala said. "She has passed to eternal life. There she is very, very powerful."

its a fact that if we continue on this path, a couple of generations from now the earth will be destroyed by man. so this is the great hope for our children and their children?

oh geez, it's such an ignorant and arrogant statement to beleive humans can actually wipe out all life on earth. Life has regularly (every 26-30 million years like clockwork) become massivley wiped out only to return iwth a vengeance. Humans only very very recently appeared on the scene.

The five well-known mass extinctions are the extinctions at the Ordovician/Silurian, late Devonian, Permian/Trias, Trias/Jurassic and Cretaceous/Tertiary limits, the most significant being at the P/T limit, the most well-known at the K/T limit

That describes the 5 mass extinctions. Here is a breakdown of the amount of life lost during each:

100 families extinct - more than half of the bryozoan and brachiopod species extinct.

Well over 99 per cent of the species that have ever lived have gone extinct.

THAT is fact and that is an important one to remember.
Why would God kill off so many of his creations? Were they imperfect? Did he get bored with them?

As for what to beleive in if not God, I feel living life without having any answers makes for a much more interesting experience. God and religion offer an easy ticket to heaven or paradise. Do as we say and you are guaranteed reward. Despite the fact that you are not supposed to worship god out of love for him, you should ignore the ever-present threat that he will kill you/torture you if you do not obey. Fear is not your motivation, oh no. Not the selfsish desire to save your own hide, nope.

Besides the appeal to vanity ('join us and you can be one of God's chosen'), and its appeal to fear ('you can't be saved without us'), its broad appeal is because it offers an easy way -- a fundamentalist need not think deeply about doctrine or be highly educated in it; as one Mormon leader once said to an audience of university students, "Don't think for yourself. The thinking has already been done." If you surrender your right to think for yourself and just do as the leader asks, the fundamentalist promises you a sure ticket into heaven. What could be easier?

It is far humbler to admit you do not have the answers and search for your own meaning in life. My problem iwth most religious beleifs is that because they think they have 'the truth' they feel it is their duty to 'save' everyone from the wrath of their god, to the point of interfering and taking peoples lives.

It is this overwhelming seriousness about religion that seems to be one of the hallmarks of the fundamentalist. He is concerned not only with his own conformity to doctrine, but the conformity of the rest of society to it, too. Many fundamentalists will not hesitate to intervene in the political process to ensure that society is forced to conform to the behaviors their world view requires, if not accept that world view. The belief that they are right, without any question, justifies, in their own minds, taking upon themselves the right to impose their point of view, by force if neccessary. An example is the attempt, by some Christian fundamentalist groups to shut down, by force, abortion clinics that are operating in accordance with the law. Some have gone so far as to threaten and intimidate employees, and even murder doctors working there.

It's not that scary to face the world without god, its actually enlightening and facinating. I am much happier an athiest than a christian scared to death of god punishing me for whacking off and wondering everyday why god let this person die and another live.

A Question. Your Help Requested!

there is something that i am not clear about in my mind, so i would much appreciate some input on this 2 part question.. i keep reading posts from persons who are desperate to leave the jw's.

however, almost without exception, these persons state that they will be shunned by their families and friends.

so, my first quesion is: do you mean that you will be officially disfellowshipped by the elders of your congregation if you simply opt to leave?.
